Which Parts of a Picture Would We Recognise in Another View?

Part 1 of 3

A blank wall looks similar at many positions, so it offers poor evidence for matching two photographs. A distinctive corner or textured patch gives us a better chance of recognising the same location again. We need both a way to select such locations and a way to describe them.
