How Do We Connect a Written Word to Its Grammatical Parts?

Part 1 of 3

The plural of city is written cities. Finding a frequent substring does not explain the grammatical relationship or the spelling change. A morphology system needs to connect a lexical analysis with the surface spelling a reader sees.
