Compare people on a common scale

Suppose two people differ in both height and weight. We can draw them as points, but how far apart should they be? Measuring height in a different unit changes an ordinary geometric distance, even though the people are the same. Measurements that tend to move together create another complication: we may count much the same difference twice.
